428786_4284998282191_886641945_nAllan Megill has been Professor of History at the University of Virginia since 1990; previously, he was a faculty member at the Australian National University and the University of Iowa. His expertise lies in the areas of intellectual history, historical theory, and historiography. He is the author or editor of a number of books, including Prophets of Extremity: Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault, Derrida (University of California Press, 1985); Rethinking Objectivity (Duke University Press, 1994); Karl Marx: The Burden of Reason (Why Marx Rejected Politics and the Market) (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002); and most recently Historical Knowledge, Historical Error: A Contemporary Guide to Practice (University of Chicago Press, 2007). He has written chapters in leading anthologies of historical theory, and his articles, essays, and think pieces have appeared in a wide variety of publications, including the American Historical Review, History & Theory, the Journal of the History of Ideas, the Journal of Modern History, and Historically Speaking. Megill has served as President, Journal of the History of Ideas, Inc. since 2005 and as a contributing editor of Historically Speaking since 2004. He received his B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan in1969, his M.A. from the University of Toronto in 1970, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1975.
